I photographed Dima in Damascus, the capital of Syria, a few weeks ago. The young violinist is part of the National Simphony Orchestra.
She clearly remembers a day, a few years ago, when she was practising inside the opera house and counted 27 bombs that fell nearby. A few hours later, when she went out of the building, she saw the dead body of a colleague from the opera staff.
Humans invented music, but they also invented bombs and that’s the story of our contradictory nature. And I’m wondering if there will be a day, eventually, when everywhere in the world, the splendid sound of music will prevail over the horrific sound of bombs.
